Breakfast Smoothie

This is my first post on my Rawfully Delicious blog!  I am really excited about this and hopefully can help other people who are trying to eat more raw foods by offering delicious recipes!

My journey from the typical North American diet to a raw vegan diet has been a long and interesting one!  It all started with a D-Tox a few years ago.  Since then I've tried many different eating plans and have consistently been drawn to eating cleaner and cleaner.  I guess this change was imminent as it doesn't get much cleaner than a raw vegan diet!

Typically we look to change something that's not working for us.  That's the reason behind my change. I haven't been feeling well for quite some time.  Off and on for I have periods of time where I feel well, but then get another "flare-up" that will last for days, weeks and even months.  During these flare-ups, I deal with physical pain and extreme fatigue.  I haven't received a diagnosis and at this point, not wanting to go for any more tests,  I've been told by my doctor that I'm on my own, so I'm taking control.  My symptoms match those of Fibromyalgia which is very difficult for some doctors to diagnose.  I've been tested many times over with blood tests and CT scans, where I'm now confident that whatever it is, is not diagnosable with modern medicine and that's ok.  I'm doing everything I can to take control of my own health and that's very empowering, although a little daunting at times!  It's much easier when a doctor can tell you what's wrong with you and give you a magic pill that'll take it away!  Not that that's always the best answer, but it is the easiest route.  More and more people are jumping on the wagon of taking control of their own health nowadays so we're not alone.  With all the chemicals, pesticides, GMOs, obesity, diseases, etc, it almost seems impossible not to start to question today's North American nutrition model.  There's one thing it's doing: NOT WORKING!

Alright, back to basics it is.  What better way to start my blog off with how I start every day, with my breakfast smoothie!  I have the exact same one every morning, and have for the past couple of months.  I'm not growing tired of if, in fact, I look forward to it!  Now don't be alarmed at the amount :D  I drink 1.5 L for my breakfast.  Yes, you read it right!  Even if you are just trying to add more raw foods to your diet, this morning smoothie is the way to do it!

2-3 bananas (depending on size)
2 cups filtered water
2 very large handfuls spinach or kale
1 cup frozen blueberries
12 sayer dates (or 5 medijool dates)
1 tablespoon flax oil

Put these ingredients in the blender in this order and turn blender on high speed (I don't have a high speed blender yet but my normal blender works just fine).  Once everything has started to blend together, add the following:

1 teaspoon maca powder
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
1 tablespoon dried goji berries

The second set of ingredients are superfoods.  I started off with only adding maca powder and chia seeds and have now added more after some research on the benefits of these nutrient dense foods.  I definitely recommend adding at least two superfoods to your morning smoothie.
